Holly's Adventure by, Alana

Today Holly woke up to the smell of food coming from the kitchen. She had recently moved into her own apartment after finishing college so her home felt a little empty. She was now at her parents’ house because she still didn’t have her utilities on which meant her apartment was a box with furniture. Holly decided to get out of bed and follow the enticing smell. Holly walked along the cold hardwood floor barefoot. It wasn’t worth it to get her clean socks dirty or that’s what she was telling herself since she left her favorite pair of slippers in her apartment. She greeted her mother with a nice and hearty “Good morning” to which her mother replied with the same.
“How are you this fine morning?” Holly’s mother asked.
“Oh I’m great but it looks like your toast isn’t.”
The smell of burning bread permeated the air.
“Oh now that was the last of it. Looks like there won’t be any toast to go with the rest of our breakfast.”
All this talk of bread brought up a question.
“That reminds me, are you going to make biscuits tonight for dinner?”
“I don’t have the ingredients for it so I guess not.”
“No worries I can go buy those premade ones and some more bread while I’m at it.”
Holly went to go get ready for her excursion for bread and biscuits. She took a quick shower and contemplated on putting on an actual outfit or throwing on a trench coat over her pajamas. She thought it over and realized that she could look suspicious wearing a trench coat.
“Real outfit it is.”
As she left she called out a loud goodbye to her mother. She took the 10 minute drive to the store and bought the two items she needed. As she walked out of the store into the store’s parking lot on the way to her car she had an idea. She thought she would go to the bakery right across the street from the grocery store. The lack of carbohydrates in her body left her craving some pastries. She bought two whole bags of delicious pastries. So delicious that she almost ate half of the pastries in one bag on the way back to her car. As soon as she started up the car and tossed her bags of pastries in the backseat she checked the time on her watch:
“10:45, still early” She said aloud to herself.
Holly started up the car and backed out of the grocery store parking lot. She was going to turn on the radio when she remembered that there was a music store not too far away from where she was. It took about five minutes to get to the music store. Holly parked her car just up the block from the music store. After walking from her car to the store she entered the store being welcomed with the sound of jazz playing in the background. Holly was so caught up in the music she didn’t even realize that she had spent an hour there. Holly was an impulse buyer. She bought five vinyl records to go with a record player she didn’t own and a guitar that she didn’t know how to play.
After exiting the music store with her questionable purchases she brought them back to her car. As soon as she got back into the driver’s seat she had another idea. She could go to that pottery place she always passes by on her way to her job. It was about 20 minutes away from where she was now. When Holly entered the pottery place the first thing she noticed was the smell of clay. At first she was only going to look at the pottery but then she was persuaded by the shop owner to join the pottery class that was just beginning. Besides the first class was free. She was going to make a vase.  It was going to take an hour for her vase to dry, so she had to come back later.  Holly thought about where to go next, to waste time for an hour.  She went to the florist to get some flowers for her vase, she loved tulips so she bought one in every color that the florist had.  It had been an hour since she left the pottery place, so she headed back there to pick up her vase.  The day did not feel complete.
“Where to now?”
She noticed that it was a nice day, so she went to the park. She sat on the bench and watched people feed the squirrels. She watched as one squirrel was fed a piece of bread, that’s when she thought to herself:
“I’d better get home, mom’s waiting for me to bring her the bread and biscuits.
Off she went, back to her car to head home.
As soon as she opened the door to the house, her mom asked:
“Where in the world have you been all this time?”
With a sly grin Holly answered, “At the store, picking up your bread and biscuits.”

 “Hmm” said her mom.

  1. This story was well written. However, I'm a bit confused on what the conflict was supposed to be. Perhaps you should develop the story even further.

  2. I really admire the simplicity of your story. I noticed there is no character development however it adds the uniqueness to your story.

  4. That was very amusing! I like how you showed how easily distracted Holly is, instead of simply telling. Great work, Alana!
